Super Bowl Football Cake

Super Bowl Football Cake

What team are you rooting for this year’s Super Bowl? Regardless of whether it’s the San Francisco 49ers or the Kansas City Chiefs, I’ve got you covered for the PERFECT Super Bowl LIV cake. Keep reading for a detailed tutorial on how to create an epic sheet cake for your Super Bowl watch party (or for a football fanatic)!

Sheet Cake

For this cake, I opted for a 9x13 sheet cake to mimic a football field. I didn’t have enough space to include numbers on the field, so I would either suggest making a smaller football or using a larger pan (maybe an 11x15 pan). Also, I realized football fields are actually skinnier than this cake represents, so a fun idea would be to turn the long edges into bleachers. This way the shape of the field is more accurate.

I used a Vanilla Sheet Cake recipe for the cake layers and frosted them with my American Buttercream Recipe. As always, I started with a crumb coat and placed the covered cake in the freezer for about 20 minutes.

Once the cake was cool to touch, I used my Wilton 789 tip to cover the cake in Leaf Green buttercream. I only frosted the top and overflowed the excess to the sides. I first smoothed out the top and then the sides, taking the excess off with my small offset spatula.

Rice Krispie Football

To make the football smashed into the center of the cake, I used Rice Krispies cereal and marshmallows. I weighed out 100g of Rice Krispies and 100g of marshmallows. I then heated the marshmallows until they were a paste-like consistency and then added the cereal to the bowl. I mixed the combination together and then molded the mixture into the shape of half a football. Using a round tip I covered the football in brown buttercream. I used Americolor’s Warm Brown with a drop of Americolor’s Chocolate Brown to achieve the perfect shade of brown. With white buttercream, I added the stitches on the football.

I wanted to create an exploding type effect where the football was inserted. I tried using the grass tip I had, but it wasn’t large enough to create the look I wanted. Instead I switched to a star tip. I still think a grass tip would be cooler though. Just make sure it is large enough to cover the gap between the football and the cake.

The Field and Posts

As I mentioned earlier, I didn’t have enough space to add numbers to my cake. I used white buttercream to make the end zones, but if you’re rooting for a specific team, this would be a fun place to incorporate the team’s colors! If you’re making this cake for a birthday, you could also include a celebratory message in this area.

To make the field goals, I used large yellow straws. I cut them to the proper size and just taped them together. I did some research after and realized you could also use flexible straws. This method may be a little easier, but your goals will be thinner.

And that’s a wrap!
